Dr. Matthews graduated cum laude from Grove City College with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a minor in biology and is a graduate of Wake Forest School of Medicine. He completed pediatric residency training at Loma Linda University in southern California where he worked extensively with Spanish-speaking patients as a bilingual provider and was trained in emergency transport of sick children.
Dr. Matthews has been certified in the Neonatal Resuscitation program, a simulation-based training program to prepare medical providers to meet crisis situations in the delivery room or newborn nursery, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, training physicians, nurses, and paramedics in the treatment of seriously ill or injured infants and children, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, focused on stabilization and treatment of older patients with heart disease.
Dr. Matthews enjoys caring for Spanish-speaking patients and advocating for good preventive healthcare including protective vaccination, dental care, and an active lifestyle, as well as supporting the growth and development of all children.
During medical school, Dr. Matthews volunteered at resident-run medical clinics as well as on medical missions trips to rural Vietnam and Togo, where he expanded his experience working with multilingual populations in resource-poor settings. Throughout his medical education, Dr. Matthews focused on patient education regarding preventive care, particularly vaccination, to keep children healthy. Dr. Matthews married Lynn Matthews, Ph.D. who works as a Professor of Marketing at Barton School of Business at Wichita State University. They are expecting their firstborn in August 2020.
